LABA Missionary Development, Mission Service Corps Consultant
As one who works with volunteers and one who has moved around in our association, talking about volunteer missions, it has occurred to me that there are church members in every one of the LABA churches who have a desire to serve the Lord in some way. Many are willing, but don't know where to begin. Because of that, I have been burdened to collect as many missions' opportunities as possible.
Intentional Acts of Servanthood and Kindness in Jesus'Name, by God's people, can have a tremendous effect on the Kingdom.
A friend who works in the Evangelism Division at the BGCT (Baptist General Convention of Texas) tells a story about a church that had some small Kindness Cards printed for the membership to give out with random acts of kindness/servanthood as they went about their daily lives. The card said something like this:
-
This small act of kindness is a gift to you from someone who loves Jesus and has personally experienced God's love.
God Loves You.
One church member went through the drive-through at a Burger King and told the cashier that he wanted to pay for the food for the car coming through behind him. He asked the cashier to give the "Kindness Card" to the driver. Others tried various servanthood/kindness efforts. This caused quite a buzz in that church as many stuck their toe into the "On Mission" water. It was habit-forming, and expanded into all sorts of ways to show God's love.
Bringing a can of veggies to help feed the homeless is a good thing, but not much of a spiritual stretch. The really effective work stretches us a little--- maybe a little outside our comfort zone. According to Henry Blackaby, in his book "Experiencing God", "...a watching world will see God at work when they see His people doing something only God can do."

One last thought: Don't forget to bathe all of your ministry efforts in prayer.
