Al Gary Chosen as LABA's Haiti Disaster Relief Coordinator

According to Mission Service Corps Coordinator, Gary Axton, Al was selected during a recent 14 member Disaster Relief assessment team meeting.  Al and his wife Judy, were missionaries to the Guadeloupe in the Caribbean for 37 years. Currently he serves as pastor of the International Christian Fellowship in Lubbock. A 5 member Disaster Relief Assessment Team from the IMB, the NAM board, and the state conventions of Florida and Mississippi recently returned to the States and is distributing suggested strategies for the various Disaster Relief teams across the nation. For a videa update, please refer to the link attached to this website, which interviews IMB missionary, Mark Rutledge, on site at one of the largest Baptist churches in Haiti. The church had a membership of 2,000. The pastor and his family were killed, along with staff members, and most all of the leadership. Only 100 of the 2,000 member church had been accounted for at the time of this interview.

Medical personnel are greatly needed. Medical personnel are nearly the only ones who are officially allowed into the country at this date. Hopefully by the summer groups will be able to assist the recovery in many personal ways. Al Gary hopes to put together multiple groups for this purpose. Groups will likely have to be "self-contained". i.e. volunteers will have to furnish their own sleeping conditions, food, water, etc. Rough camping at best!

We feel like we are in a race to help. However, this is not a 100-yard dash. We are running a marathon. Mission groups from our church may still be present in Haiti 10 years from now.

If you would like to make a contribution to the Disaster Relief you may send them to the LABA as we have started a designated account for this purpose.
